PAWS was formed in 1990 by a handful of people and encouraged by the County veterinarian. They recognized the need to assist low-income families in caring for their animals. The purpose was both educational and charitable. As community involvement increased, PAWS applied for and was granted 501c3 status in August 2007.
The organization is comprised of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and a Board of Directors. The annual membership meeting is held in January, and general meetings are held monthly. These meetings are held in Oriental Town Hall because we have no physical facility.
As the community recognizes the benefits of PAWS, we have grown and now utilize several nearby veterinary offices, have devised a system utilizing vouchers which can be redeemed at one of the participating veterinary offices for spay and neuter surgeries as well as emergencies. We have also staffed a phone "hot line" that responds to these requests.
While our primary mission is to provide financial assistance with spay and neuter services in order to decrease pet overpopulation in Pamlico County, we also can provide financial assistance for emergency situations that cannot be afforded by the pet owners.
We educate the community about humane and responsible pet ownership. Previously the New Leash On Life program, through the Pamlico Correctional Facility, helped to find homes for over 300 shelter dogs. Unfortunately, this program has been suspended in this county. PAWS is dedicated to "Helping the Helpless", and relies solely on our fundraising activities and your generous, tax-deductible contributions.
Thank you for supporting Pamlico Animal Welfare Society.
